A young woman has begun a hunger strike at her boyfriend’s home in the Ghasuria area of Hakimpur (Hilli) upazila in Dinajpur, demanding marriage. The two are said to have been in a relationship for the past two years. She is insisting that she will stay at the house until he returns to it. The incident took place on Friday.
Local sources said the young woman had been in a relationship with Imadul Haque Imon for two years. After the relationship became known, Imon recently refused to marry her. She then came to Imon’s house, took up position there and made her demand for marriage. On hearing of it, the local union council member Mobarak Hossain went to the scene and sat down with both families to try to find a solution, but the two families could not reach any immediate decision. Imon has meanwhile left the house, switched off his mobile phone and moved elsewhere. The woman has also accused him of a sexual relationship.
The local union council member Mobarak Hossain said efforts at a settlement were continuing through talks with both sides. The young man’s mother has claimed that a marriage is not possible against the family’s wishes, and has spoken of taking a legal course if necessary. Local people say that if the two have indeed been in a long relationship, there should be a proper settlement with the agreement of both sides.
