Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at the Kremlin on Monday, August 24. The talks focused on the two countries’ growing partnership and on expanding cooperation in trade, energy, fertilizer and other key sectors, according to Firstpost.
At the start of the meeting, Jaishankar conveyed greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Putin, along with a personal message from Modi.
Welcoming Jaishankar to Moscow, Putin said his visit reflected the depth and strength of the decades-long relationship between India and Russia. Russian outlet Sputnik quoted Putin as saying: “Minister, I am very pleased to see you. Your visit today reflects the scale of the relationship built between India and Russia over decades.”
Putin said the two countries continue regular cooperation across government, parliamentary and economic spheres. He said bilateral trade between India and Russia continued to grow in 2026, adding that cooperation between the two countries is expanding in nearly every area.
Jaishankar said a meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission had already been held, at which a positive assessment was made of various aspects of the two countries’ cooperation.
“Overall, I think our economic cooperation has grown very significantly,” Jaishankar said, adding that India remains keen to expand cooperation further in these areas.
Jaishankar also discussed Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming schedule at the meeting. He said Modi is looking forward to meeting Putin at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, and is also keen to welcome the Russian president at the BRICS summit set to be held in India.
