To be a complete believer, one must avoid the forbidden, be content with the sustenance God has given, fulfil the rights of one’s neighbour and possess good character, Allama Mufti Abul Qasem Nomani, the muhtamim and shaykhul hadith of Darul Uloom Deoband, has said.

He made the remarks in a pre-Jumma sermon at the national mosque, Baitul Mukarram, on Friday. At the start of the sermon, Allama Nomani cited a hadith narrated by Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (RA). He said the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) once asked the companions, “Who among you will take some things from me, to act upon or to teach others?”

Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (RA) said, “I am ready, O Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) then took his hand and taught him five things.

Allama Nomani said, first, one must avoid the forbidden; through this a person can become a great worshipper. God has made some things lawful and some forbidden, so staying away from the forbidden in every area of life is an important duty of a believer. Doing a deed is often easy, he said, but restraining oneself from something forbidden is hard, which is why the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave special weight to shunning the forbidden.

Second, he said, one must be content with the sustenance God has given; through this a person can become truly rich, for contentment of the heart is real wealth rather than outward possessions.

Third, the rights of one’s neighbour must be fulfilled; good conduct towards a neighbour is an important part of faith, and one whose behaviour leaves a neighbour unsafe cannot be a complete believer.

Fourth, one must want for others what one wants for oneself; heeding others’ comfort and discomfort, joy and pain, and likes and dislikes is the mark of a true Muslim. Others being safe from a person’s hand and tongue, he said, is the mark of true faith, and one must refrain from hurting others by word or deed.

Fifth, one must refrain from excessive laughter, he said, as too much laughter has a negative effect on the heart; rather than wasting time in needless amusement, one should focus on the remembrance of God and self-purification. Putting these five things from the hadith into practice, Allama Nomani said, lets a person build themselves into a true believer and a good Muslim.
