On August 4, 2021, RAB detained Porimoni after a raid lasting nearly four hours, saying various narcotics had been found at her home. She was later shown arrested in a drug case and had to spend about a month in jail.
That case against Porimoni is still ongoing, but she had never spoken directly about the arrest. Recently, in a live talk show, the former RAB intelligence chief who led the raid against Porimoni, Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Khairul Islam, said there had been no valid reason to arrest her. He claimed the raid to arrest Porimoni had been carried out on the orders of the then RAB director general (DG), Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, and that he had raised questions about it at the time.
After Khairul Islam’s statement, Porimoni thanked him in a long post on social media late on Friday night. She said the incident had severely damaged her personal, social and professional life, and asked the state whether it was possible to return the honor, mental peace and years of her life that she had lost.
Porimoni wrote: “Former RAB intelligence chief Lieutenant Colonel Khairul Islam, late though it is, you have publicly admitted certain truths, through which the country’s people have learned that on August 4, 2021, after the drama of a long raid at my home in Banani, I was arrested unjustly, entirely unlawfully and for the interests of a special quarter, on the orders of the then RAB chief and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. Shown arrested in a false and fabricated case, I was placed on seven days’ remand and kept in jail for 20 days straight. No one on earth but Allah and I can fully understand how much that experience damaged and devastated my life.”
Putting a question to the state, Porimoni wrote: “Perhaps this time the honorable court will acquit me of that staged state case. But is it possible to return those days to me? The life, the honor, the mental peace I have lost, will I ever get them back? Will the state take responsibility for the false, misleading and controversial perceptions created about me in people’s minds? If I ask the state for answers to these questions, can it give them?”
Noting that she still has to carry the controversy of the arrest, Porimoni wrote: “The impact of one incident has changed my life in such a way that I still have to bear its burden today. I want no innocent person to be a victim of such injustice in future. May people’s trust in every institution of the state remain intact.”
