A Bangladeshi-American man was shot and killed by a gunman at a Bangladeshi-owned pizza shop in Brooklyn, New York. The victim was identified as Md Raju, 44. Another Bangladeshi-American man, 39-year-old Mohammad Rasel, was injured in the shooting and is being treated in hospital.
Raju’s family home is in Sonaimuri upazila, Noakhali, Bangladesh, where his wife and children still live.
The shooting took place around 11:30 p.m. Saturday at American Best Wings and Pizza on Rockaway Avenue, in the 73rd Precinct. New York Police Department officers arrived at the scene at 12:01 a.m. after being notified and recovered the two gunshot victims, who were taken to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center.
Raju, who had been shot in the chest, was pronounced dead by the attending physician at the hospital. No one has yet been arrested in connection with the shooting, and police are investigating.
Mohammad Rasel, Raju’s co-worker, who is being treated in hospital, told reporters: “A Black man walked into the shop and, without saying anything, shot me directly. I was hit in the thigh and collapsed to the floor. He then shot Raju, who was working as the cashier. He was hit in the chest. The pizza shop belongs to a friend of Raju’s — Raju looked after it as if it were his own.”
Abdul Jalil, the shop’s owner, said: “Raju was my friend. He looked after my shop as if it were his own. His home is in Kangshanagar village, Amishapara union, Sonaimuri upazila, Noakhali. His wife and two young children live back home.”
Jalil said: “Raju came to the United States three years ago. He has no relatives here. We need financial help from the Bangladeshi community to send his body home. We’re hoping for active support from the Bangladesh Society and other associations.”
Bangladeshi immigrants in the United States have called for a thorough investigation and for the gunman to be quickly brought to justice.
