Setting aside a 40-year feud, residents of Noagram Union Parishad (UP) in Lohagara upazila, Narail, have announced Humayun Kabir Sheikh as their agreed chairman candidate. Thousands of people from five villages gathered together at the Brahmandanga Dakhil Madrasa grounds on Tuesday afternoon, August 25, for the occasion. All present pledged to work together for UP chairman candidate Humayun Kabir, while also vowing to work jointly to maintain peace and order across the five villages that had been in conflict.

At the exchange meeting, chaired by social worker Abul Hossain Molla of Char-Brahmandanga village and moderated by former UP member Khairul Islam, the chief guest address was delivered by Humayun Kabir Sheikh, president of the Noagram union unit of Sramik Dal and UP chairman candidate.

Others who spoke included former Noagram UP chairman Nurujjaman Nur Nabi; former UP member Kaikobad Laskar; social workers Sahidar Rahman Molla, Nazir Molla, Manjurul Islam Milon and Shamim Parvez Jony; and Maulana Mizanur Rahman, superintendent of Brahmandanga Dakhil Madrasa, among many others.

Speakers said thousands of people from various professions across Handola, Baribhanga, Kankul, Brahmandanga and Char-Brahmandanga villages in Noagram union had come together, setting aside a 40-year feud. They said residents, having put behind them years of village conflict and bloodshed, have now pledged never to engage in violence or killing again. Over the feud’s 40-year history, more than 50 violent incidents between the five villages left at least five people dead and nearly 1,000 injured, with extensive destruction and looting of homes. From now on, speakers said, no one in the five villages will engage in further violence or clashes. At the meeting, Humayun Kabir Sheikh was announced as the Noagram UP chairman candidate to help preserve peace across the five villages. Attendees pledged to work together to secure his victory in the upcoming UP election and to maintain peace and order in the villages.

The Handola, Baribhanga, Kankul, Brahmandanga and Char-Brahmandanga villages of Narail’s Noagram union had long seen recurring conflict and violence over dominance, UP elections, land disputes and other issues, a pattern that persisted for roughly 40 years, with violence typically spiking after UP elections. That cycle of conflict came to an end as of Tuesday. In the interest of preserving harmony among all residents, villagers from the five villages jointly declared Humayun Kabir Sheikh their single agreed chairman candidate for the upcoming UP election.

People from various professions have welcomed the five villages coming together to avoid further village violence, conflict and bloodshed, expressing hope that this unity will endure for good.
