Prime Minister Tareque Rahman has decided to build a highway on the Rahmatpur-Hijla-Mehendiganj-Bhola route to connect the island district of Bhola to the country’s main road network. The decision was made at a meeting held Saturday, August 22, at the prime minister’s office in Tejgaon.
The meeting discussed three proposals for establishing a direct road link between Bhola and Dhaka and Barishal. Of these, the Rahmatpur-Hijla-Mehendiganj-Bhola route proposed by the Roads and Highways Department was selected.
The prime minister emphasized building an integrated road system to remove geographic obstacles and expand uninterrupted communication and business opportunities. He also directed the relevant officials to move the project forward quickly.
Those involved with the project said the proposed route would require widening existing roads alongside building new roads and three small bridges. The project’s feasibility and viability will be assessed quickly.
If implemented, the project would create a direct road link between Bhola and Barishal, Dhaka and other parts of the country. It is expected to cut travel time and cost while reducing reliance on waterways.
Road Transport and Bridges, and Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, State Minister for the Shipping Ministry and Bridges Division Rajib Ahsan, and senior officials from the relevant ministries and divisions attended the meeting.
