The member-secretary of Sreepur municipal BNP in Gazipur, Md Billal Hossain Byapari, has alleged an online “smear campaign” against him and demanded that those responsible be identified within 12 hours. He said that if police could not show progress within the stated time, he would harm himself in front of the police station.

He made the announcement on Sunday (2 August) afternoon in the presence of Gazipur police superintendent Sharif Uddin at a drug- and crime-prevention meeting organised by Sreepur police.

Billal Hossain Byapari is a resident of Kewa village in Sreepur municipality and the member-secretary of Sreepur municipal BNP.

In his remarks, Byapari alleged that several fake Facebook accounts had spread an edited photo combining a picture of him with liquor bottles on a table and pictures of two other people, damaging his personal and political reputation.

He said that as soon as he learned of it, he filed a general diary (GD) at Sreepur police station, but that police had so far shown no visible progress.

Addressing the police superintendent, Byapari said that if the people behind the smear were not identified within the next 12 hours, he would harm himself in front of the police station.

He asked how ordinary people could get police service if even a municipal BNP leader’s complaint brought no effective remedy.

The meeting, chaired by Sreepur police station OC Mohammad Shahinur Alam, had Gazipur police superintendent Sharif Uddin as chief guest. Leaders and activists of various political parties, teachers, journalists and people of various professions attended.

Gazipur police superintendent Sharif Uddin said he had assured the Sreepur municipal BNP member-secretary of proper justice over his statement. Law-enforcement members would stand by him as they stood by every citizen, and he would receive justice, the SP said.
