Trinamool Congress has decided to dissolve all its organizational committees against the backdrop of a party crisis and internal discontent in West Bengal. At the same time, the party has launched a performance evaluation and organizational review to overhaul the organization.
The party leadership said on Wednesday that committees at all levels of Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, as well as those of its associate and affiliated wings, were being dissolved immediately. A new organizational structure would be announced after the review was completed.
The decision came at a time when several of the party’s legislators have been publicly criticizing the leadership. A section of the rebel legislators has already applied to the assembly speaker for recognition as a separate legislative group. Political analysts said this has deepened the party’s internal crisis.
Discontent within Trinamool has been growing since its defeat in the West Bengal assembly election last May. Several leaders and legislators have raised questions about the leadership’s decisions, candidate selection and electoral strategy. That has prompted discussion within the party about its organizational weaknesses.
Party sources said the entire organization, from the district to the booth level, would be rebuilt. Who was active on the ground, who failed to carry out their responsibilities and where organizational gaps existed would all be assessed in detail.
A section of political observers believes the party has turned things around through organizational changes under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership in the past as well. This time, however, the situation is comparatively more complex. Electoral defeat, the legislators’ rebellion and questions over the leadership have together left Trinamool facing a difficult political challenge.
Political circles say the decision has opened a new chapter in West Bengal politics. All eyes will now be on how united Trinamool can remain after the reorganization, and which way the leadership’s relationship with the rebel camp turns.
