Dhaka-bound Royal Express overturns, 23 injured

A Dhaka-bound Royal Express passenger bus has lost control and overturned in Chuadanga, injuring at least 23 people including women and children. One of the injured had a hand severed, and four are in a critical condition.

The accident happened around 10 a.m. Thursday in the Sarojganj Bazar area of the Chuadanga-Jhenaidah road.

Police, witnesses and local traders said a Royal Express bus left Chuadanga for Dhaka at about 9:45 a.m. On reaching the Sarojganj Bazar area, the bus lost control, struck a tree at the roadside and overturned, injuring the passengers.

Locals, the fire service and police rescued the injured and admitted them to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital. Seven of the injured, including women and children, are from a single family.

Dr. Abdur Rahman, senior consultant in the orthopaedics department of Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, and Dr. Ehsanul Haque Tanmoy, a specialist in the surgery department, said 23 injured people had been admitted, four of them in a critical condition. Seven have been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Chuadanga Sadar police officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman said the bus involved in the accident had been recovered and traffic on the road was normal.

Masud Parvez Rasel, member of parliament for Chuadanga-1, and Sharifuzzaman Sharif, administrator of the district council and general secretary of the district BNP, visited Chuadanga Sadar Hospital to see the injured.
