Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain has announced a “home-to-home health screening” programme to take healthcare to people’s doorsteps nationwide and detect various serious illnesses at an early stage. He said 100,000 health workers will be appointed to implement it, 80 percent of them women.
He gave the information as chief guest at the launch of “Hygiene for Health Bangladesh” at Gulshan Lake Park in the capital on Wednesday evening, July 22.
“Every citizen of the country has a constitutional right to healthcare, and the government will ensure that no one is deprived of medical care,” the health minister said. “To that end, house-to-house health screening will be carried out across the country.”
He said: “The women health workers appointed will make ordinary women aware of the early detection of breast and cervical cancer and teach them the methods of necessary testing. They will also go house to house with special healthcare kits to carry out basic health tests including blood pressure, weight, diabetes and lipid profile.”
Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain said: “There is no alternative to a clean environment and following hygiene rules to ensure a healthy life. Without raising public awareness it is not possible to build a healthy, skilled and knowledge-based nation.”
At the event he expressed concern at the rising rate of caesarean deliveries in the country. In his view, many children are now born by caesarean section and in many cases newborns are afterwards deprived of breast milk, particularly colostrum. Mothers’ work pressures, a lack of awareness and changes in lifestyle are reducing breastfeeding, increasing children’s nutritional and health risks.
Others present included Miss World Bangladesh 2026 winner Samanjar Saeed, Gulshan Society president Omar Sadat, Miss World Bangladesh national director Azra Mahmud, Manusher Jonno Foundation executive director Shaheen Anam and Gulshan Society general secretary Mujibur Rahman Mridha, among other guests.
