Bus falls into Padma River at Daulatdia ferry ghat; 2 dead, 45 missing

RAJBARI — Two women have been confirmed dead and 45 passengers are missing after a passenger bus fell into the Padma River while boarding a ferry at Daulatdia ghat on Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

The rescue ship Hamza has arrived at the scene, and the Fire Service and other agencies have begun a search, officials said.

The bus, carrying more than 50 passengers, fell into the river while attempting to board the ferry, officials said.

The accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the No. 3 ferry ghat in Daulatdia, Goalanda upazila of Rajbari district, officials said.

According to witnesses, a bus operated by Souhardo Paribahan, traveling from Kumarkhali in Kushtia to Dhaka, fell into the river while boarding the ferry at the No. 3 ghat. The bus is believed to have been carrying more than 50 passengers, witnesses said. A few passengers swam to shore, but most are missing, witnesses said.

“A Souhardo Paribahan bus suddenly fell into the Padma River while trying to board the ferry,” said Sohel Mia, a local resident. “Five or six passengers swam to the bank, but the others have not been found. The rescue ship Hamza has begun rescue operations.”

Dr. Shariful Islam, resident medical officer at Goalanda Upazila Health Complex, confirmed two women had died.
