A new mother has died following a caesarean operation at the Medinova Clinic and Diagnostic Centre in Dimla upazila, Nilphamari, with allegations of gross negligence and incompetence by the clinic.

The woman died on Monday (29 June) morning while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

The deceased was Tuli Begum, 29, wife of Emdadul Haque of Tepakhribari union.

The family alleges that Tuli’s abdomen began to swell and her condition deteriorated from a day after the caesarean. Although they repeatedly informed the clinic authorities, the family says, the clinic dismissed it as “normal” and refused to refer her for advanced treatment, costing her the chance to survive.

According to the family, Tuli’s caesarean was carried out at the Medinova clinic on 22 June. Both mother and baby were said to be stable on the first day, but from the next day her abdomen swelled and her condition steadily worsened. Despite repeated appeals to the clinic, the family says, staff told them: “There is nothing to worry about; this happens after a caesarean, treatment is ongoing, she will recover.”

Finally, on Thursday (25 June), when her condition became critical, the family took her — against the clinic’s wishes — to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where she died on Monday morning while under treatment.

The deceased’s husband, Emdadul Haque, said: “After the caesarean, both my wife and child were well. But from a day later my wife’s condition began to deteriorate. Whenever we told the clinic, they said she was fine. In the end I took her to Rangpur, but she could not be saved.”

Contacted about the incident, the owner and manager of the Medinova clinic declined to comment.

Dimla Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Md Rasheduzzaman said: “I have learned of the incident through you. If a complaint is received, legal action will be taken.”

Local residents and concerned citizens alleged that such clinics were carrying out operations with unqualified doctors and inadequate facilities, and called on the administration to take strict legal action against those responsible without delay, warning that such negligence-related deaths would otherwise not stop.
