Although the one-year term of the current Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) committee has ended, its elected leaders will get the chance to continue in a routine role for another 90 days, or three months, under the union’s constitution. As a result, the current committee, led by vice-president (VP) Abu Sadik Kayem and general secretary (GS) S M Forhad, will remain in charge for now, until fresh elections are held.
The current DUCSU committee’s one-year term ended last Sunday (September 14). However, the university administration has not yet announced a schedule for the new election. Under the constitution’s provisions, the current committee will therefore carry out an additional 90 days of routine duties.
According to sub-clause (c) of Article 6 of DUCSU’s constitution, an elected committee’s term is 365 days. If elections are not held within that time, the elected leaders may continue in their roles for a further 90 days. However, their responsibilities during this period are limited essentially to routine functions.
The university administration says that although the current committee will continue in office after its term has expired, it will not be able to take any major or policy-level decisions. Those familiar with the matter say the current committee’s authority will end as soon as a new election schedule is announced. Several leaders of the current committee say they will step down at any point once the schedule is announced.
Meanwhile, sources say the currently elected DUCSU leaders will continue serving as university senate members, subject to maintaining their student status, until a new election is held.
Notably, DUCSU elections were held in 2019 after a gap of 28 years. Following that, leaders from a Shibir-backed panel won the election held on September 9, 2025, and assumed charge of DUCSU on September 14. Their fixed one-year term ended last September 14. But with no new election held, they are getting the opportunity, under the constitution’s provisions, to continue in a routine role for another three months.
