Two people were killed in separate road accidents in Jaintapur upazila, Sylhet, on Monday, August 24 — one on the Sylhet-Tamabil highway at Katagang around 2 p.m., and another at Panichhara around 10:45 a.m.

In the Katagang accident, Hasan Mia Gulal, 35, was killed when his motorcycle collided with a truck on the Sylhet-Tamabil highway near Tamabil Highway Police Station in Jaintapur upazila around 2 p.m. Monday.

Hasan Mia Gulal was the son of the late Saifullah, of Hatirpara village, Goainghat upazila.

According to police and local sources, Hasan Mia was riding his motorcycle toward Jaflong when it collided head-on with a Sylhet-bound hydraulic truck. He was critically injured and rushed to Jaintapur Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Separately, a bus struck an auto-rickshaw on the Sylhet-Tamabil highway at Panichhara in the upazila, killing one passenger and injuring three others. The accident occurred around 10:45 a.m. Monday in front of the gate of Chairman Yakub Ali’s house, near Sylhet Gas Field Limited.

The passenger killed was a 17-year-old girl who had come to visit Sylhet with her uncle, aunt and grandmother; her family is from Araihazar upazila, Narayanganj. The injured were identified as Mohammad Ali, 28; his wife, Sumaiya Akter, 22; and Mohammad Ali’s mother, Kulsum Begum, 60 — all residents of the Dholaipar Kadamtali area of Jatrabari, Dhaka.

According to police and local sources, the four had set out by auto-rickshaw toward Jaflong on Monday morning. When they reached the main gate area of Sylhet Gas Field Limited, a speeding Sylhet-bound bus operated by Ammajan Enterprise slammed into the Jaflong-bound auto-rickshaw. The teenage passenger died at the scene. Her uncle, aunt and grandmother were critically injured and taken by local residents to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Sub-Inspector Zakir Hossain of Tamabil Highway Police Station confirmed the accident, saying: “We reached the scene quickly after being notified. We recovered the deceased’s body and prepared an inquest report. The family has asked to take her body without an autopsy, and it will be handed over to them with their consent. The bus and the auto-rickshaw involved in the accident remain in police custody.”

In the separate Katagang accident, police are preparing an inquest report for the motorcyclist killed in the head-on collision with the truck. The truck has been seized by Tamabil Highway Police. Traffic on the highway has since returned to normal, and legal proceedings are under way.

The accidents have sparked strong anger among local residents, who allege that vehicles carrying illegal smuggled goods from India have long driven recklessly on the Tamabil highway, significantly raising the risk of accidents on the road. Residents are demanding stricter controls on illegal Indian smuggling and tighter traffic monitoring on the highway.
