JIBANNAGAR, Chuadanga — A mobile court has sentenced a man posing as an eye specialist to three months in jail without hard labor and sealed the private eye clinic where he had practiced for years without medical qualifications, officials said.

Tafhimul Hossain held no recognized degree and was not registered with the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC), but had been practicing as an eye specialist for an extended period. The mobile court detained him during an operation at Hasdah Bazar in Jibannagar upazila and ordered the clinic he ran to be closed.

The raid was carried out on Wednesday, May 6, afternoon by Ashraful Alam Russell, the Jibannagar upazila nirbahi officer and executive magistrate.

Hossain, 45, was detained at an establishment operating under the name “Baitul Mamur Eye Hospital” after irregularities were uncovered, the court said.

According to mobile court sources, Hossain had no recognized degree and no BMDC registration, but continued to identify himself as an eye specialist. He charged patients for cataract surgery and other complex eye procedures, court officials said, and many ordinary people were defrauded.

Asked during the operation to produce a valid certificate, training records or a BMDC registration number, Hossain was unable to do so, the court said. Initial questioning indicated that he had been using another registered doctor’s BMDC number to defraud patients — an act the court described as a serious offense.

The mobile court sentenced him under the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council Act 2010 to three months in jail without hard labor. The illegally operated clinic was sealed immediately, and Hossain was warned against resuming such activities in the future.

Hossain is the son of Moniruzzaman of Bahrampur village in Haripur upazila, Thakurgaon district, officials said.

Local residents said complaints of fake treatment at the clinic had circulated for a long time and that many patients said they had been defrauded after receiving incorrect treatment. Residents said anger had built up because no visible action had been taken until now, and they expressed satisfaction with the recent operation, urging that similar raids be conducted regularly.

Dr. Fahmida Akter Runa, a medical officer at the Jibannagar upazila health complex, and a team from the Jibannagar police station assisted the raid.

Authorities said operations against fake doctors and illegal clinics would continue as part of efforts to protect public health.
