Just five days before he was due to return home on leave, Shahidul Islam, also known as Shahidullah (40), a young man from Chattogram’s Mirsarai, has died in a road accident in the Middle Eastern country of Oman. The accident occurred while he was crossing the road in Oman’s Barka on Saturday (6 June) night. Nurul Absar, former chairman of the Ichhakhali union council, confirmed the matter. Shahidul Islam was the fourth son of the late Mohammad Mestri of the Askar Ali Baidya house in the Jamadargram area of ward 3 of Ichhakhali union in Mirsarai upazila. His body is currently being kept in the morgue of Barka hospital.

According to the family, Shahidul Islam had worked abroad for 20-25 years in the hope of his family’s wellbeing, doing embroidery work there. He was due to return home next Thursday (11 June). He died in the accident while returning home from the market with various goods for his children, wife and relatives. The family had been overjoyed at his homecoming; with his death in Oman, that joy has turned to grief, and his children have been orphaned at a young age. Md Abu Nasr Riad, former president of the Mirsarai Samity Oman, said the organisation would provide all kinds of help to take the body home.
