JASHORE — Police in Chougachha, Jashore, have recovered an abandoned mortar shell dating to the 1971 Liberation War.

The shell was recovered Saturday (April 18) afternoon from the Kapotaksha Bridge area of the municipal town, officials said.

According to police and local residents, several people were sitting in the shade under the bridge during the intense heat when they noticed an iron object. They pulled it out of the soil. Realizing it was a mortar shell, they informed the police. Officers arrived at the scene, recovered the shell and moved it to a safe location.

Kanta Sarkar, a local trader, said, “I sell clay pots at the Parbazar market in the Brijghat area. We were sitting and talking around noon. Suddenly we noticed this iron object. We pulled it from the soil. Police came on the report and took it to the station.”

Ruhul Amin, former commander of the upazila Muktijoddha Sangsad, said, “The recovered mortar shell was a powerful one used by enemy forces during the great Liberation War of 1971. But having spent so many years in the ground, it has rusted and is no longer usable.”

Nurul Amin Sikder, officer-in-charge of Chougachha police station, said officers recovered the shell after being notified. It is believed to be a powerful mortar shell used by enemy forces during the 1971 Liberation War, though it has been damaged from years in the ground, he said.
