A court in Chuadanga has sentenced a man, Rahm Ali, 60, to life imprisonment for killing his wife by slitting her throat with a sharp da (machete). He was also fined 10,000 taka, with a further three months’ rigorous imprisonment in default of payment.

Judge Shimul Kumar Biswas of the Chuadanga Special Sessions Judge’s Court delivered the verdict Tuesday afternoon, August 25. The convicted, Rahm Ali, is the son of the late Abu Taleb of Gopinathpur village, Chuadanga sadar upazila.

Advocate Maruf Sarwar Babu, public prosecutor (PP) at the Chuadanga court, confirmed the verdict.

According to court documents and case records, Rahm Ali married Alea Begum, 40, roughly 25 years ago. They had four children together. Rahm Ali had two previous marriages before marrying Alea. He was a drug user and had repeatedly assaulted his wife amid ongoing family disputes.

On the night of November 14, 2015, after having dinner, he went to sleep alongside two of his daughters. Around 4:30 a.m. the next morning, his daughter Lipchhia woke to the sound of a door opening. She saw her father, Rahm Ali, holding a blood-stained gachi da (a curved knife used for tapping palm trees). Rahm Ali quickly left the house. Lipchhia then looked under the bed and found her mother’s body, throat slit and covered in blood. Her screams brought other family members running, who then also saw Alea’s body.

Alea’s son, Chan Mia, filed a murder case against Rahm Ali at Chuadanga Sadar police station in connection with the incident. SI Mohsin Ali, then of Chuadanga Sadar police station, was the investigating officer. A charge sheet was submitted against him under Section 302 of the Penal Code on March 4, 2016. After a lengthy trial process, in which 13 witnesses testified, the court delivered its verdict Tuesday.
