Bengali actress Rupa Dutta, who drew attention in 2022 after being arrested on a pickpocketing allegation at the Kolkata International Book Fair, has now been granted bail after her arrest in Mumbai on charges of stealing items worth 148,000 rupees. A Mumbai metropolitan magistrate’s court granted the actress bail.

According to Mumbai police, a woman named Dimple Singhvi filed a theft complaint at Colaba police station on July 12. She alleged that her purse was stolen while she was heading from Babulnath Temple to a busy area of Colaba.

According to the complaint, the purse contained a diamond-studded gold bracelet worth roughly 120,000 rupees, 10,000 rupees in cash, Apple AirPods worth 15,000 rupees, and several important documents.

After receiving the complaint, Colaba police launched an investigation. Reviewing CCTV footage, police alleged that Rupa Dutta could be seen following the complainant. She was arrested on August 6. Police say some of the stolen items were also recovered from her.

After a lengthy legal process, the court of Metropolitan Magistrate R S Bhosle granted Rupa Dutta bail on a personal bond of 50,000 rupees. Under the court’s order, she must refrain from tampering with evidence in the case and cannot leave the country without permission.

Rupa Dutta’s lawyer, Sunil Pandey, denied the allegation, claiming the actress has been framed in a false case and is the victim of circumstances.

She was previously arrested in 2022 over a pickpocketing allegation at the Kolkata International Book Fair. That incident, too, drew widespread attention at the time.

Rupa Dutta has acted in Bengali and Hindi films. She has played a significant role in the popular Bengali film “Sathi.”
