The Chuadanga district administration has seized 210 kg of government OMS rice and 70 kg of flour in a drive in the Jhenaidah Bus Stand Para area of Chuadanga town, and fined OMS dealer and municipal BNP organising secretary Sohel Malik Sujon 50,000 taka. In the drive at about 4pm on Wednesday (10 June), an almsadhu (van) loaded with government rice and flour was recovered from the Jhenaidah Bus Stand Para area, and an investigation confirmed the food was OMS-programme stock.
Sohel Malik Sujon (47), OMS dealer for ward 7 of Chuadanga municipality and the municipal BNP organising secretary, has his OMS warehouse in the old stadium area of Chuadanga town but was taking the goods by almsadhu toward Satgari when, on secret information, a police team led by executive magistrate and nezarat deputy collector Alauddin Al Azad conducted the drive. Seven sacks of government OMS rice and two sacks of flour — 210 kg of rice and 70 kg of flour — were recovered from the almsadhu. Under section 45 of the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009, Sohel Ahmed Malik Sujon, son of Shamsul Haque Malik of the Jhenaidah Bus Stand Para area, was fined 50,000 taka.
A crowd of onlookers gathered at the scene during the drive; locals thanked the administration for seizing the rice and demanded the dealer’s punishment, with anger over the alleged attempt to illegally sell government food-aid rice and flour for higher profit. After the drive, executive magistrate Alauddin Al Azad said: “Government food-aid rice and flour can in no way be illegally sold or smuggled. The district administration’s drives against such irregularities will continue regularly.” Sadar upazila nirbahi officer Tithi Mitra and a district police team were also present.
