President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on China to increase investment in Bangladesh and step up cooperation in creating an environment for the safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingya.
He made the call when outgoing Chinese ambassador Yao Wen met him at Bangabhaban on Wednesday. Praising China’s constructive role in the Rohingya crisis, the president said China’s initiatives would help resolve the crisis and support sustainable repatriation.
The president called for more cooperation and investment in sectors including ready-made garments, electric vehicles, light engineering, high-tech electronics, semiconductors and solar energy.
Welcoming multilateral regional connectivity initiatives, including the Kunming-Chattogram corridor and the China-Myanmar-Bangladesh economic corridor, he said Bangladesh is ready to work with China and other partners for mutual benefit. He described the modernisation and expansion of Mongla port and the establishment of a Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone as important for connectivity, industrialisation and economic development.
Calling for continued Chinese technical and financial support for the comprehensive management and restoration of the Teesta river, he asked for talks on implementing the project to move forward.
Praising Yao Wen’s contribution to strengthening Bangladesh-China relations, the president described China as Bangladesh’s trusted friend and strategic partner. Recalling martyred President Ziaur Rahman’s visits to China in 1977 and 1980, and his own visit in April 2026 with senior and young Bangladeshi leaders and students, he said such visits and meetings had deepened and strengthened bilateral ties, and expressed hope the relationship would grow stronger still.
The president thanked China for building and funding the 1,000-bed Bangladesh-China Friendship General Hospital, and sought Chinese expertise and technology for treating complex blood cancers at the Combined Military Hospital, which is open to the public. The ambassador assured him of cooperation.
Wishing the outgoing ambassador a bright future, the president said Bangladesh would gratefully remember his contribution to Bangladesh-China relations. The president’s military secretary, secretary, press secretary and an additional secretary of the foreign ministry were present, and the ambassador was accompanied by deputy chief of mission Dr Liu Yuyin.
