Local Government State Minister Mir Shahe Alam has said local government elections will be completed within the current fiscal year. He made the announcement Saturday after paying tribute, together with leaders of the newly formed Mokamtala upazila BNP in Bogura, at the graves of martyred president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia at Zia Uddyan in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. He called on the leadership to play a responsible role in unity, discipline and public welfare.
On the subject of local government elections, Mir Shahe Alam said fair and participatory elections are important for strengthening local government institutions further, and that local government elections will be completed within the current fiscal year.
He said the core objective of every government initiative is public welfare, ensuring good governance, and further accelerating the country’s development. To that end, he called on everyone associated with the government to work responsibly and in a coordinated manner.
Asked about the country’s ongoing power and energy situation, local government elections, and the drafting of regulations for e-rickshaws, the state minister said Prime Minister Tareque Rahman would present the government’s short-, medium- and long-term plans for the power and energy sector through the national parliament. He said the government’s goal is to build a well-planned and sustainable power and energy system that takes into account the public’s needs and the country’s overall development.
