Husband accused of beating wife to death in Ghatail

A man in Ghatail, Tangail, has been accused of beating his wife, Tamanna Islam Tonni, 20, to death. Police detained the accused husband, Md Roman Mia, immediately.

The incident took place on Tuesday night (September 29) in Uttar Khilgati village of Deulabari union in the upazila.

Tonni was the daughter of Tofazzal Hossain, an expatriate worker from Uttar Khilgati. Roman Mia is the son of Tula Mia of Shibrambari village in Alokdia union of Madhupur upazila.

According to family and police sources, Roman Mia spent Tuesday night with his wife at his in-laws’ house. During the night the couple argued over family matters and came to blows. At one point Roman called the household together and said his wife had fallen ill.

Early on Wednesday, Tonni was taken in a critical condition to Madhupur upazila health complex, where the doctor on duty declared her dead.

Her family says there were marks of injury on her throat and all over her body, and believes she died from a blow by her husband during the night. “My son-in-law killed my daughter during the night. I have come to the police station to file a case,” said her father, Tofazzal Hossain.

Local people said Tonni married Roman a year ago, and that Roman was in her room that night and they quarrelled.

“Her husband tortured and killed the girl. Hers is a happy family, and she was married with great celebration just a year ago. Nothing like this has happened in our area before. We demand proper justice after a fair investigation,” said Abu Hanif, panel chairman of Deulabari union.

“The accused, Roman, has been arrested. The body has been sent to the Tangail Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem, and details will be known once we get the report. Legal action is under way,” said officer-in-charge Moksedur Rahman.
