Controversy continues to follow Air India. Following allegations of drug use against one pilot, two more pilots have now tested positive in preliminary drug screening. Final test reports have not yet been received. As a precautionary measure, they have already been removed from flight duty.

On August 4, an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi encountered a mid-air incident. Shortly before landing in Delhi, the aircraft suddenly experienced severe turbulence and dropped roughly 300 feet. Eleven passengers and four crew members were injured. However, Air India said none of the injuries were serious.

The matter of pilot drug testing came to light after an investigation into the incident began. Initial testing found the presence of psychoactive substances in one pilot’s system. A second round of testing was then conducted to confirm the finding, which also came back positive. The test found evidence of marijuana use in the pilot’s system, along with the presence of sleeping medication.

The pilot had claimed that his duty roster did not allow adequate rest, and that he had taken the sleeping medication due to not getting the minimum required rest.

Following widespread discussion of the incident, Air India took a strict stance on pilot drug testing, making it mandatory for all its pilots. It is understood that roughly 300 pilots have been tested so far.

This same testing process has now found two more pilots testing positive in preliminary screening. They too have been temporarily removed from flight duty. However, it is understood that no additional action will be taken against them until final test reports are received.

Final test results are expected within the next 24 to 48 hours. If those reports also confirm drug use, strict action could be taken against the two pilots concerned. Air India authorities are therefore now focused on the outcome of the final tests.
