A BNP leader named Gazi Rafiq, 45, also known as Dhakaiya Rafiq, was shot dead by assailants in the Dakshin Labanchara area of Khulna, police said. The killing took place near his home in the Dashgate area of Labanchara at around 11:30 a.m. on Friday (June 12).

Gazi Rafiq, a resident of the Dakshin Labanchara Mathabhanga area and the son of Ratan Gazi, had long been associated with party politics as a member of the Botiaghata Union unit of the BNP.

According to the family and local residents, Rafiq’s eldest son had left home a few days earlier in resentment. Rafiq went out on Friday morning to look for him. At one point, unable to find him, he was sitting in an open space behind the house. A few unidentified assailants then came there and opened fire on him. The bullet struck him in the abdomen and he collapsed on the ground.

Hearing the gunshots, people from the neighbourhood rushed to the scene. He was later taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition with the help of relatives and local residents. A doctor in the emergency department declared him dead.

On receiving the news, senior officers of the Khulna Metropolitan Police visited the scene. Members of the law enforcement agencies collected various pieces of evidence from the spot. Sources said it was being examined whether previous enmity or any political rivalry was behind the incident.

Confirming the incident, Khulna Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (CTSB) Abdur Razzaque said police were at the scene and the matter was being investigated seriously. Efforts were under way to determine why the killing took place and who was involved, he said, adding that details would be disclosed after the investigation.
