Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has provided the financial grant needed to build a home for Ritu Porna Chakma, one of the star players of Bangladesh’s national women’s football team. The prime minister handed her the cheque at his office in the parliament building on Tuesday afternoon, during a break in the budget session. State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque, State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Mir Helal Uddin, State Minister for Textiles and Jute Shariful Alam and Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) president Tabith Awal were present.
The BNP has stood by Ritu Porna Chakma and her family before. In 2025, when her cancer-stricken mother needed support for treatment, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and “Amra BNP Paribar” convener Atiqur Rahman Rumon — on the direction of Tarique Rahman, then the party’s acting chairman and now prime minister — travelled to her home in a remote hill area of Rangamati to check on her mother and provide the necessary financial help.
One of the brightest stars of Bangladesh football, Ritu Porna Chakma continues to play an important role in the success of the country’s women’s game. She was one of the team’s mainstays in winning the SAFF Women’s Championship in 2022 and 2024, and made an important contribution to Bangladesh reaching the final round of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the first time in the country’s history in 2025.
