US President Donald Trump has expressed interest in meeting Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. In an interview on Wednesday on a popular podcast called “Pod Force One,” run by the US outlet the New York Post, he said he had not yet had the chance to meet Mojtaba Khamenei, but would certainly like to meet him if the opportunity arose, expressing hope that such a meeting could happen at some point in the future.
Asked about Khamenei’s current condition, Trump said: “I don’t know when I’ll have the good fortune to meet him. But Mojtaba is certainly involved in the talks we are having with Iran. I think Iranians respect him a lot. But going by the stories one hears, if they are true, then Mojtaba may have lost many parts of his body.”
For context, on 28 February, Israeli and US forces launched a surprise attack on Iran. In that attack, Iran’s then-supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and many of his family members were killed, while his son Mojtaba Khamenei narrowly survived that day. On 8 March, Tehran announced Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new supreme leader. Since then he has issued messages from time to time, which are read out on state television, but so far no photo, video or audio recording of the new supreme leader has been released.
