Iran is considering striking US military installations in Europe if its ongoing war with the United States escalates further. Potential targets under consideration reportedly include US military installations in Bulgaria and Cyprus, the Financial Times reported, citing two sources within the Iranian government.
Meanwhile, talks between the United States and Iran to end the war have effectively collapsed. US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Washington currently has no talks under way with Tehran and no plans to start new ones. Separately, the United Arab Emirates announced Wednesday that all “trade, commercial exchange, and financial transactions” with Iran would be suspended until further notice.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the main flashpoints in the dispute between the United States and Iran. Trump has repeatedly claimed the critical waterway is open and that shipping is moving normally under US control. In reality, however, shipping through the strait remains very limited.
This week, one person was killed in an attack on a cargo ship traveling through the Strait of Hormuz. Fox News, citing an Iranian military spokesperson, reported a warning that ships attempting to pass through the strait could end up with “a few pretty holes” in their hulls.
Meanwhile, Trump has also used harsh language against long-standing US allies over their refusal to cooperate with military operations in the Middle East. He has warned Oman not to stand in the way of his Middle East policy. He has also ordered a significant reduction in joint military exercises with South Korea. If the US-Iran war drags on, the conflict could spread beyond the Middle East to Europe and other regions. Analysts also warn that continued deadlock in the Strait of Hormuz raises the risk of further increases in global oil prices.
