Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called on doctors to work with sincerity and a sense of responsibility to further strengthen public trust and confidence in them. Healthcare is a basic right, he said, and the government’s goal is to deliver it to every citizen’s doorstep.

He was speaking as chief guest at an event marking the 81st founding anniversary of Dhaka Medical College (DMC) on Saturday (July 11).

Doctors must carry out their duties in a way that restores patients’ faith in medical care, the prime minister said, while stressing better service quality and clean environments in hospitals. Keeping hospitals clean could not be left to hospital authorities alone, he added; everyone involved must play a conscious and responsible role from their own position.

To strengthen the health sector, the prime minister announced the recruitment of 25,000 midwives at the government level. He also said another 100,000 health workers would be hired to expand healthcare nationwide, with priority given to women.

Earlier in the morning, the prime minister arrived at the DMC hospital campus for the anniversary, accompanied by his wife and DMC alumna Dr. Zubaida Rahman. During the visit he laid the foundation stones for two women’s hostels under the Directorate General of Health Education’s ’20 Hostel Project.’

His arrival created a festive atmosphere around the Dhaka Medical College campus from the morning. Chhatra Dal activists from Dhaka University, Jagannath University, Dhaka College, Eden College, Titumir College and the Dhaka metropolitan north and south units lined both sides of the road from the Central Shaheed Minar to DMC, welcoming the prime minister with slogans and greetings. The college principal, hospital director, senior doctors and current and former students were present.
