Police have been deployed in the Government Alia Madrasa area of the capital’s Bakshibazar over fears of a fresh clash. On Saturday (8 August), security was stepped up at the madrasa, the Alia Madrasa road and the Bakshibazar intersection.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Chawkbazar police station officer-in-charge (OC) Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the matter. He said police personnel were stationed at the madrasa gate, the road and the Bakshibazar intersection.

Police sources said that a few days ago a clash broke out between activists of Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir over control of a hall at the Government Alia Madrasa. Several people on both sides were injured, and during the clash there were also chases and counter-chases with locally made weapons.

OC Abdullah Al Mamun said that as one side had announced it would enter the madrasa on Saturday, fresh fears of a clash had arisen, and police had been deployed as a precaution.

Earlier, on Tuesday afternoon, tension over control of the hall between activists of the two student organisations sparked a clash. When the situation later heated up, chases and counter-chases took place between the two sides.

Eyewitnesses said several people were seen holding locally made weapons during the clash. Videos that spread on social media also showed scenes of the clash with weapons. Several people were injured and fell to the ground, after which classmates rescued them and took them to hospital.
