Authorities formed a three-member committee to investigate the deaths of six newborns in a ward at Ad-din Medical College Hospital in Dhaka’s Mogbazar, officials said Wednesday. The panel includes officials from the Health Department and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Professor Dr. Prabhat Chandra Biswas, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services, announced the panel’s formation after visiting the hospital Wednesday.
The committee has been ordered to submit its report within 72 hours, according to sources. The hospital’s post-operative ward and neonatal intensive care unit have been suspended temporarily.
A Health Ministry official said the deaths did not appear to result from medical negligence. “We believe initially that a technical fault caused this tragic incident,” the official said.
A CID expert team has begun investigating the technical fault.
