Iraqi President Nizar Amidi has said Iraq will not allow its territory to be used to launch attacks against any other country. He made the remarks on the second day of the eighth Baghdad Dialogue conference.
Amidi said there is “no justification” for using Iraqi territory to attack any country in the region. He said only “two or three” armed groups in the country have yet to surrender their weapons, and that talks are under way to bring their weapons under state control.
“The constitution states that control of weapons must rest with the state,” the Iraqi president said. “Najaf’s religious authorities have also called for this.”
He also said the impact of the ongoing regional war has been “extensive” on Iraq.
On the Strait of Hormuz, Amidi said its effects have been felt not just by Iraq but by the entire world. He said Iraq continues talks with Iran to resolve the complex problems surrounding Hormuz.
