Two young cousins drowned in a pond while playing in the yard of their home in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha.
The accident happened beside the house at around 11:30am on Monday (October 26).
The dead children are Araf Babu, 2, son of Abdur Razzak, and Mishkatul Jannat, 2, daughter of Ashraful Islam, of Shomospara (Chowdhurypara) village in Talukkanupur union of the upazila. Araf and Mishkatul were first cousins.
According to local sources, Araf Babu and his cousin Mishkatul Jannat were playing in the yard with other children at around 11:30am on Monday. Unnoticed by anyone, the two fell into the pond next to the house. About an hour later the children’s mothers came out to the yard and grew worried when they could not see their son and daughter among the children still playing there.
Family members searched for them in several places and finally recovered the bodies of the two children floating in the pond beside the house.
Firoz Kabir Prodhan, a member of the Talukkanupur union parishad, confirmed the deaths of the two cousins.
