Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that on the Day of Judgement the Holy Quran will come forward and ask Allah to honour the one who recited it. The Quran will say, ‘O my Lord, honour him.’ He will then be given a crown of honour. The Quran will say again, ‘O my Lord, honour him more.’ He will then be dressed in a garment of honour. The Quran will then say, ‘O my Lord, be pleased with him.’ And Allah will be pleased with him.

The person will then be told, ‘Keep reciting the Quran and keep rising in rank.’ For every verse of the Quran, he will be raised one rank. (Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2915)

In another hadith, Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that on the Day of Judgement the one who recited the Quran, memorised it and lived by it will be told, ‘Recite and climb the ranks of Paradise. Recite clearly and slowly, as you used to recite in the world, for your place will be at the last verse you recite.’ (Abu Dawud, Hadith: 1466; Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2914)

On the rank of the reciter in Paradise, Abu Said (may Allah be pleased with him) reported another hadith in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that when the reciter of the Quran enters Paradise, he will be told, ‘Recite the Quran and keep rising through the ranks of Paradise.’ He will then recite, and with each verse he will rise one step, until he reaches the last verse he knows by heart. (Musnad Ahmad, Hadith: 11360; Ibn Majah, Hadith: 3780)

Beside reciting the Quran, practising it regularly and keeping hold of the verses one has memorised also matters greatly. Many people learn the Quran but do not recite it regularly, and in time they forget the verses they learned. Yet the Prophet (peace be upon him) told believers to take care of the Quran and to recite it regularly.

Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘Take care of the Quran. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the Quran can slip from people’s memory faster than a camel slips free of its tether.’ In other words, without regular practice there is a risk of forgetting what one has memorised of the Quran. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith: 5033; Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1880)

Learning the Quran, reciting it regularly, keeping memorised verses in practice and living by its guidance are therefore important for every Muslim. Keeping a regular bond with the Quran brings the benefit of its teaching in this world, and the hope of its rank and reward in the hereafter.
