Artificial intelligence (AI) is growing more powerful around the world, but its rapid rise is putting the cyber defence sector at growing risk. That worrying picture emerges from new research by the international cybersecurity company N-able, titled “The AI Fog Report: When the Signal Becomes the Noise”.
The company’s recent report looks at how small and medium-sized businesses are expanding to keep their operations running in the age of frontier AI.
A survey of 595 cybersecurity decision-makers and professionals across the United States and the United Kingdom found the security industry at a crossroads. Of the organisations surveyed, 86.1% said the number of false and unnecessary alerts in their security systems had risen sharply over the past year, and for about 24.2% alerts had risen by more than 50 percent. Among respondents whose alerts had increased, 40.2% blamed a growing number of detection tools, 26.2% faster AI-assisted attacks and 20.1% a combination of factors.
Of respondents, 84.5% confirmed that they had suffered more than one AI-assisted cyber attack in the past year.
N-able’s research found that organisations are no longer getting the results they want simply by adding layer upon layer of AI on top of existing security technology. As AI use grows, the main aim of AI security solutions should be to reduce needless complexity and help security staff focus on important decisions.
More than half of respondents (56.0%) believe AI’s greatest success is in cutting the time from detecting a cyber attack to stopping it. Again and again, respondents ranked correctly identifying what matters most above sheer volume of information, making clear that ensuring the quality of information, rather than the quantity of signals, is now the sector’s biggest challenge.
Asked what AI’s main goal should be, the largest share of respondents (37.8%) said detecting the full range of cyber threats and presenting accurate information precisely were equally important. Another 32.6% prioritised broad threat detection, and 29.6% chose cutting false or needless alerts to receive confirmed, important ones.
