SHERPUR — A union council member and journalist in Sherpur’s Jhenaigati upazila has filed a complaint with police after receiving a text message threatening his life, officials said.

Md. Zahidul Haque Monir filed the general diary, numbered 714, at Jhenaigati Police Station around 11 p.m. Sunday, March 15, after receiving the threat, officials said.

Monir is a member of Ward No. 1 of Jhenaigati Sadar Union Council and serves as the Sherpur district correspondent for the daily Pratidiner Sangbad. He is also the treasurer of the board of directors of Jhenaigati Small Traders’ Cooperative Society Ltd. and is involved with several voluntary and social organizations.

According to the general diary, a text message was sent to his number, 01778919000, from the number 09610973028 around 7:52 a.m. Sunday. The message read: “Get ready to die, Monir. You will be killed very soon.” Concerned for his own and his family’s safety, Monir filed the diary at the police station.

Monir said someone was trying to intimidate him deliberately because of his work on various social and public-interest issues as a public representative and journalist. “I received such a death threat from an unknown number,” he said. “My family and I are suffering from a sense of insecurity. I have informed law enforcement and filed a general diary at the police station.”

Md. Amirul Islam, the officer-in-charge of Jhenaigati Police Station, said the journalist and union member had filed a general diary over the threat. Necessary action will be taken after investigation, he said.

The incident has caused concern in the local community, residents said. They demanded that the mystery be quickly solved and those involved brought to justice.
