SHERPUR — The Jamaat-e-Islami candidate in the by-election for the 13th Parliament’s Sherpur-3 constituency, covering Sribardi and Jhinaigati, announced a boycott on Thursday, alleging irregularities in the voting, a party official said.
The decision was announced during voting on Thursday, April 9, said Maulana Hafizur Rahman, the chief of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Sherpur district unit. “The candidate decided to boycott the vote after considering various irregularities and circumstances,” he said, adding that a news conference would be held in the afternoon to provide details.
Voting in Sherpur-3 began at 7:30 a.m., with three candidates contesting the seat: BNP candidate Mahmudul Haque Rubel, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Masudur Rahman Masud, and Mizanur Rahman of the Bangladesh Socialist Party (Marxist).
Voting in 299 seats of the 13th Parliament was held on Feb. 12. The vote in Sherpur-3 was postponed after the previous Jamaat-e-Islami candidate died after the election schedule was announced.
