CHOUGACHHA, Jashore — Police in Chougachha upazila of Jashore district have detained a day laborer without any case filed against him, his family said.
Mahidul Islam, son of the late Khayer Mondal of Swaruppur village in Hakimpur union, was taken from his home on the night of March 24 by Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman of Chougachha police station, his family said. He was then shown as an unidentified accused in a pending case and sent to court, they said.
His wife Manjuara, son-in-law Mostak and other relatives said Islam was a day laborer who supported the family by working in others’ fields for daily wages. He was not an active member of any political party and faced no allegations against him, they said. They said they did not know why police had detained him.
Islam is the sole earner in a family of six, the relatives said. His family has been left in despair, they said.
Amin Khan, a senior teacher in the union, said Islam was a victim of vendetta politics. “Police acted unjustly under someone’s influence,” he said.
Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman, the arresting officer, said: “He supported the Awami League. That is his offense.”
Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of Chougachha police station, said: “I am on leave. I will be able to comment once I return to the station.”
Syed Rafiqul Islam, Jashore’s police superintendent, said officers had been instructed not to arrest or harass anyone without a specific complaint. “If such an incident has occurred, we will look into it and take action,” he said.
