GAIBANDHA — An overnight fire in Gaibandha’s Saghata upazila burned a cattle shed to the ground, killing two cows of an improved foreign breed and causing about 400,000 taka in damage, the affected family said.

The fire broke out late Thursday night in Pabantair village in Ghuridaha union of Saghata upazila.

According to local sources, Asadul Islam, son of Sinatullah of Pabantair village, had eaten dinner and gone to sleep with his family as usual. Late at night, neighbors began shouting after seeing flames from his cattle shed. When Asadul came out of his house, he saw that the fire had been started by an electrical short circuit in the shed.

Local residents tried to put out the fire, but within moments the flames had spread through the entire shed. The two foreign-breed cows inside the shed were burned and died at the scene. Furniture and other essential items in the shed were also reduced to ash.

Asadul Islam, the affected farmer, said the two cows had been his family’s main source of income. “Having lost everything in the fire, I am now devastated,” he said. “The damage is about 400,000 taka.”

On Friday morning, Kamal Pasha Mandal, secretary of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ghuridaha union and a candidate for union council chairman, and other local leaders visited the site after receiving word of the fire. They expressed sympathy for the affected family and pledged quick assistance.

Kamal Pasha Mandal offered personal financial assistance and called on the relevant authorities to ensure government support for the affected farmer.
