DINAJPUR — Three separate fires over the past three days in Dinajpur’s Khansama upazila have spread alarm among residents and destroyed shops, a home and livestock, causing significant financial losses during the Eid al-Fitr holiday.
Local sources and the fire service said the fires, in different parts of the upazila on consecutive days, have left several families and traders destitute. Quick action by the fire service prevented any deaths.
The first fire broke out on Saturday night, the day of Eid, at Tuparmor Bazar in the Tongua area of Bherbheri union. The blaze, triggered by an electrical short circuit, destroyed 10 shops within minutes. The fire service estimated damage at about 12 lakh taka.
The second fire broke out early Sunday in the Khamar Bishnuganj area of the same union, sparked by a mosquito coil at a home. Three cows and two goats were killed, and furniture and a motorcycle were destroyed. The family’s losses were estimated at about 1.5 lakh taka.
The most recent fire broke out Monday evening in a home near Pakerhat Zia field in Angarpara union, again caused by an electrical short circuit. Furniture and other belongings were destroyed, with damage of about 3 lakh taka.
Assistant commissioner (land) Ayan Farhan Shams visited each of the sites, met with those affected and promised government assistance.
Khansama fire service team leader Abul Kalam Azad said the fires did not spread further because crews arrived in time. He urged residents to be more careful with electrical equipment and open flames.
Dinajpur-4 lawmaker and parliamentary whip Akhtaruzzaman Mia distributed cash, food and clothing among those affected. “Many such accidents happen due to carelessness,” he said, calling the losses during Eid “truly painful” and saying greater public awareness could help prevent similar disasters.
Residents in the affected area remain on alert.
