DHAKA — The BNP is not desperate to come to power, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, adding that ownership must be returned to the people. Many problems will be resolved if elections are held by next February, he said.
He made the comments on Thursday, July 31, at a discussion at the National Press Club marking the anniversary of the July-August uprising.
On reforms, the BNP secretary general said political parties had reached agreement on 12 fundamental issues. Efforts were under way to reach consensus on the rest, he said. Issues on which no consensus could be reached should be set aside, and only the fundamental issues should be reformed, he said.
Saying that democracy must have limits, Fakhrul said: “There is mudslinging in democracy, but there must be a limit. Otherwise, bitterness will be created in the future.”
He called on everyone to work together to build the country, keeping in mind the sacrifices of those killed in July and August.
