COX’S BAZAR — Teachers dismissed from an education program in the Rohingya camps blocked the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf highway on Monday.
The protest began Monday, Aug. 18, in the morning in the Kotbazar area of Ukhiya, causing a long traffic jam on the highway.
Protesting teachers said 1,250 local teachers working in the Rohingya camps had been dismissed without cause.
The local teachers who had lost their jobs gathered with banners at 7 a.m. in the Kotbazar area of the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf highway, chanting slogans and blocking the road. Officials and workers of local and foreign NGOs operating in the Rohingya camps were stopped.
The dismissed teachers said the NGOs were stalling, citing financial constraints. They said the administration had given assurances but no resolution had followed, prompting them to return to the streets.
