DHAKA — The interim government has appointed a new secretary to the Education Ministry’s Secondary and Higher Education Division.

Rehana Parvin, the executive chairman of the National Skills Development Authority, or NSDA, has been appointed to the post. Parvin is the first woman in the country’s history to serve as education secretary.

The Ministry of Public Administration issued the notification on Monday, Aug. 18.

Thirty-three senior secretaries or secretaries have led the undivided Education Ministry since 1971. After the ministry was split, seven senior secretaries or secretaries have served the Secondary and Higher Education Division. None had been a woman.

The previous senior secretary of the division, Siddique Zubair, who had served on a contractual basis, was withdrawn on July 23 amid student protests and attached to the Ministry of Public Administration the same day.
