DHAKA — Protesting MPO-listed teachers and employees announced new programs to press demands including a rise in housing allowance, leaders said.
They will hold a sit-in and silent procession at Shahbagh at noon Tuesday with black cloths tied around their heads. Teachers at district and upazila headquarters will also observe the program.
The announcement came at a rally at the Central Shaheed Minar on Monday. At the rally, teachers also announced the withdrawal of all teachers from training programs.
Speakers said they would not return to classrooms until the government accepted their three-point demand for increases in the housing, medical and festival allowances.
On Sunday, the eighth day of the protest, when a hunger procession by teachers headed toward the Education Building was blocked by police, teacher leaders called for an indefinite hunger strike and a full work stoppage.
That morning, the Finance Division consented to a housing allowance of 5% of salary for MPO-listed teachers and employees. But the teachers and employees rejected the decision and announced that they would continue the protest until their demands were met.
Teachers have warned they will press on until a notification is issued raising the housing allowance to 20%, the medical allowance to 1,500 taka and the festival allowance to 75%.
