DHAKA — Teachers and staff at MPO-listed private schools marched with black flags Saturday to press demands for higher housing and medical allowances and the nationalization of all private educational institutions.

The procession began at the Central Shaheed Minar at about 12:30 p.m. and moved to the road beside Kadam Fountain in front of the High Court, where the demonstrators staged a sit-in.

Gana Adhikar Parishad general secretary Rashed Khan expressed solidarity with the march. A section of the protesters were also continuing an indefinite hunger strike at the Shaheed Minar.

The teachers and staff are demanding that the housing allowance be raised to 20 percent of basic pay, that the medical allowance be raised from 500 taka to 1,500 taka, and that festival bonuses be increased from 50 percent to 75 percent of basic pay. They are also calling for the nationalization of all private educational institutions.

Demonstrators said they will hold a “March to Jamuna” program Sunday. Their protest has so far included work stoppages, long marches and road blockades.
