KALIGANJ — Shaheed Nur Ali College football team won the Usha inter-college football tournament held in Kaliganj on Saturday.
Saiful Islam Firoz, the paddy-sheaf candidate for the Jhenaidah-4 Kaliganj constituency in the 11th parliamentary election, inaugurated the daylong tournament at the Naldanga Bhushan School ground by releasing pigeons in the morning. Before the opening, he exchanged greetings with players from the four participating teams.
Organized by University Student Usha and conducted by the Usha Central Executive Council, the tournament featured four college football teams. In the opening match, Shaheed Nur Ali College defeated Anwar Maqlej College 2-0. In the second match, Government M.U. College beat Abubakar Maksed Ali College 4-1 in a tiebreaker. In the final, played at 3 p.m., Nur Ali College defeated M.U. College 1-0 to clinch the championship. Al Jasir of the winning team was named man of the tournament.
The match referees were Abdur Razzaq, Momenul Haque and Maruf Hossain. Chief guest Saiful Islam Firoz handed the trophy to the winners after the match. The event also honored two distinguished Kaliganj athletes for their contributions to sports: national football team player Alamgir Hossain and Al Jasir, who won the 200-meter gold medal at the SAF Games in Nepal.
Former players Nurul Islam and Amamul Haque Khoka were also presented with medals. Those present included BNP leaders Shahidul Islam, Saidul Islam, Ilias Rahman Mithu, Anwar Hossain, Ohed Lashkar and Jabed Ali; Usha Central Council president Shibli Rahman Pavel; general secretary Zubair Al Mahmud; IBI branch secretary Ashiqur Rahman; advisers Ashraf Mondal, Sadhan Dada and Mostafa Morshed Tota; and sports organizers Ajit Kumar Bhattacharya and Asaduzzaman Mukul, among others.
