ISLAMABAD — Pakistan cricket legend and former captain Shahid Afridi has been awarded Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the country’s second-highest civilian honor, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to sports.

President Asif Ali Zardari presented the medal to Afridi at a ceremony at the presidential palace, Aiwan-e-Sadr.

The award specifically cited Afridi’s role in Pakistan’s historic victory at the 2009 ICC World Twenty20. His leadership in English county cricket and the World Championship of Legends was also recognized.

After receiving the honor, Afridi shared his reaction on X, formerly known as Twitter. He said receiving the award from the president was a moment of great pride. He said the honor was not his alone but belonged to the entire Pakistani nation.

Afridi said the medal reflected the love, prayers and unwavering support of ordinary people over his long career. He dedicated the honor to Pakistan’s fallen soldiers.

“I dedicate this medal in humble tribute to the sacrifice of those who gave their lives for the country,” he said. He concluded by praying for Pakistan’s security and prosperity.
