BARISHAL — National Citizen Party (NCP) southern chief organizer Hasnat Abdullah said the Election Commission had failed to explain why it would not allot the water lily as an electoral symbol, casting doubt over the commission’s intentions.

Hasnat made the comments Sunday afternoon while addressing as chief guest the NCP’s district and metropolitan coordination meeting at the Barishal Shilpakala Academy auditorium.

An executive order on a national referendum and on implementation of the July charter must be issued by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Hasnat said. If the order has to be taken from “Chuppu,” he said, the revolution will end in its coffin, using a derisive nickname for President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

The party is working to build organizational capacity in all 300 constituencies, he said. “Political parties bear the greatest responsibility for ensuring that we can move toward an acceptable democratic election through qualitative, structural transformation,” Hasnat said.

NCP senior joint convener Ariful Islam Adib was the chief speaker at the meeting. Divisional organizing secretary Mujahidul Islam Shahin attended as a special guest. Barishal district chief coordinator Abu Saeed Musa chaired the session.
