THAKURGAON — Jamaat-e-Islami is trying to derail the election by pushing demands such as proportional representation because it fears the vote, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Tuesday.
He made the remarks at an exchange meeting organized by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party at Lakshmirhat High School field in Kishmat Keshur Bari, Thakurgaon, at midday.
Saying there was no scope to postpone the election, Mirza Fakhrul asked: “Brother, why are you so afraid of the vote? They know their own existence will not survive, and that is why Jamaat is putting forward irrational programs.”
The BNP secretary general said that if the election were delayed any further, Bangladesh would turn into a failed state. “If anything is forced through beyond what we have agreed on for reforms, the entire responsibility will fall on the government,” he said. “One party is going from house to house giving women a distorted version of religion. We must beware of those who practice hypocrisy.”
Fakhrul promised that if the BNP came to power, it would create jobs for 10 million unemployed people within 15 months. “We want to make the judiciary fully independent,” he added.
He also called on the government not to impose anything beyond the issues on which political parties had agreed in the July national charter. “For nine long months you spoke to all political parties in the name of reform and reached agreement on many issues,” Fakhrul said. “If you now try to impose anything beyond those agreed issues on the people of this country, all responsibility will be yours.”
